This will be accomplished by ensuring that each child has access to appropriate and meaningful learning experiences to meet the demands of the 21st century.
Student Learning
Numeracy Matters:
In education numeracy matters because it's one of those quiet superpowers that shows up everywhere not just in math class.
-
It builds everyday life skills. Numeracy helps students make sense of the world: managing money, understanding time, reading charts, comparing prices, and following recipes. Without it, daily decisions get harder and more stressful. Math skills don't live in a bubble. Science uses data and measurement, geography uses maps and scales, economics relies on graphs, and even subjects like PE and music involve counting, timing and patterns. Numeracy also trains the brain to reason, spot patterns, analyze information, and solve problems. Almost every career uses numbers in some way, from scheduling to data analysis and technology. Good numeracy increases job opportunities. Strong numeracy boosts overall academic confidence. In short: numeracy isn't just about being good at math. Its about being able to function, think, and participate confidently in the world.
Importance of Literacy
-
Educators are given the responsibility of cultivating and strengthening young minds. An essential component of this task is ensuring students are literate. Literacy is important because it's the foundation for learning, communication, and participation in everyday life. Like numeracy, it goes way beyond one school subject. Literacy allows students to read, write, speak, and listen effectively. This helps students understand instruction and express ideas clearly. Every subject relies on literacy. Students need reading and writing skills to understand text, solve word problems, and complete assessments. Strong Literacy also: Promotes Confidence, Supports social and civic participation, and increases scores on assessments. In essence, literacy empowers people to understand the world, communicate within it and shape their own futures.
Parent Involvement is Key:
-
Whether it is numeracy or literacy, parental involvement is the key. Research has shown that students achieve more in school when their parents are involved in their education. Reading together at home greatly improves reading skills. Reading aloud with a child contributes significantly to the child's reading abilities.
-
Parent Involvement also: Leads to better classroom behavior, lifts teacher morale.
Formative Assessments vs Summative Assessments
-
Formative assessments are important because it helps learning while it's happening, not just at the end. It guides both teachers and students in real time, making education more effective and supportive. Formative assessments (discussions, observation, drafts, and feedback) help students understand what they're doing well and what they need to improve before final assessments. Teacher here at Hayti R-2 School District use formative assessments to spot misunderstandings early and adjust lessons, pace or strategies to meet students needs. Because of this regular feedback, teachers can help students know how to improve. This makes learning clearer and more motivating. When students receive ongoing guidance and opportunities to improve, their performance on summative assessments and overall achievement improves. Other examples of formative assessments used here at Hayti R-2 School District include: Quizzes, self-reflections, class assignments, surveys, polls, and exit tickets.
-
Summative Assessment is typically administered at the end of a learning period, such as a unit, term, or school year. They are designed to evaluate student learning, knowledge, proficiency, and success with limited, measured feedback. Summative assessment is important because it evaluates what students here at Hayti R-2 School District have learned; it provides a clear picture of achievement and helps measure educational outcomes. They show whether students have met the learning objectives or standards. Summative assessments are often used for grades, promotion, and qualification, making them essential for academic progression and accountability. Lastly, summative assessments help the school district evaluate the effectiveness of teaching programs, curricula and instructional methods.
